Experience Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) lies in the northwestern corner of Rwanda, encompassing the Rwandan portion of the Virunga Massif — a chain of six dormant and one active volcano straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Covering approximately 160 square kilometres, the park rises from 2,400 to 4,507 metres above sea level at the summit of Mount Karisimbi. It is internationally acclaimed as one of the last remaining habitats of the critically endangered mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), with roughly half the world's population living in these forests. The park was established in 1925 as Africa's first national park and rose to global fame through the pioneering research of Dr. Dian Fossey, whose work with gorillas transformed conservation thinking worldwide. Beyond gorillas, the park shelters golden monkeys, forest elephants, and a rich tapestry of Afromontane flora including giant lobelias and Hagenia trees draped in old-man's beard lichen. Trekking permits, guided hikes to the Dian Fossey Research Station, and golden monkey tracking make this park a multi-layered destination. The nearby town of Musanze (Ruhengeri) serves as the main gateway, offering comfortable lodges ranging from community guesthouses to ultra-luxury camps perched on volcano slopes.

Travel Requirements

All visitors to Volcanoes National Park require a gorilla trekking permit issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), currently priced at USD 1,500 per person per trek. Permits must be booked well in advance — ideally 3 to 6 months ahead — as availability is strictly limited to protect gorilla welfare. A valid passport and a visa for Rwanda are required; most nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or apply online via the Rwanda e-visa portal. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry into Rwanda. Visitors should be at least 15 years old to participate in gorilla trekking and must be free of communicable illnesses such as colds or flu on the day of the trek. Good physical fitness is recommended as treks can last between 2 and 8 hours depending on gorilla family location and altitude. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, rain gear, and garden gloves are strongly advised.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a gorilla trekking permit?
Gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and can be booked through their official website or through licensed tour operators. The permit costs USD 1,500 per person and should be reserved at least 3–6 months in advance as slots fill quickly
How long does a gorilla trek take?
Trek duration varies from 1 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. Once you locate the group, you are allowed exactly one hour in their presence. Most treks average 3–5 hours total.
Is gorilla trekking physically demanding?
Yes. Treks involve hiking through dense forest at altitudes between 2,400–3,700 m on steep, often muddy terrain. A moderate-to-good level of fitness is recommended. Porters are available for hire at park headquarters to assist with bags and offer support on steep sections.
What should I pack for gorilla trekking?
Essentials include waterproof hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts and trousers (to protect against insects and nettles), a rain jacket, garden gloves, insect repellent, a hat, snacks, and at least 2 litres of water. Do not bring perfume or strong-smelling products near gorillas.
Can children go gorilla trekking?
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years. This rule exists to protect both children and gorillas, as children are more likely to carry communicable diseases and may find the physical demands challenging
